The holiday is over, back to work.

As I exited Nice’s international airport, crowds cheered, half-naked people ran by me in the streets, loud horns sounded in my ear and an overwhelming sense of victory gripped my home country.

They were of course cheering the national team’s victory in the World Cup finals and not my return to France. Well, it’s my first day back at work today so my holiday is officially over. I had a good trip; a week in the south of France then three days in Paris and two in Switzerland visiting friends.

I’ll be starting work on my redraft next Monday. Had a few ideas while traveling that I want to fit it. With the actual plot and story basically done, I’ll be inserting the themes of the story more with the redraft. I think the basic theme is: in order to make the world (metaphorically) a better place, individuals have to show willingness to be heroic. A bit grandiose, I’ll admit, and of course it will be more subtle in my book, but I believe life in the end comes to choices and when you’re faced with a situation, you either make the heroic choice or you don’t.

Some people might consider this a little extreme but in my opinion it is the only way to view life. Being heroic is not always a big thing. For me it can be a small thing, like deciding to do the dishes to save your wife from the work even when you don’t feel like doing them, as much as a big thing, like running into a burning building to rescue a child. I’ve been doing a lot of research on parenting, as my wife and I plan to have a baby in the future, and when writing a story, I keep in mind the moment when I’ll be reading it to my kid and I’m always thinking if the lessons in the story are what I want my future child to learn.
