Real life > writing

This will be a shorter post than normal since I don’t really have that much to report. I got down about 4000 words last week. Had my birthday and some extra work that took time away from writing. Thanks to everyone who sent well wishes.

I’m currently at the chapter before the finale begins, sort of the midpoint of “Act 3.” The scenes I had envisioned for the current chapter were not really long enough to fill it but I didn’t want to go into the next part for balance reasons.

It was slower going this week as I had to scramble to think of a scene or two to fit between where I am now to where I want the next chapter to start. Only does good things for the story though. I’ve found that while I had a scene list before I started writing, it was impossible to think of all the scenes I would need until I was actually writing the story. Sometimes you can only tell what scene is missing when you are actually writing and you realize that if you skip a certain part the story will not make sense.

These last few chapters have been in story terms very moment by moment with very few transition scenes compared to earlier chapters. I feel this makes sense as the earlier chapters had a lot of set up and a lot of traveling whereas now the story is coming to the finale so we are following the characters closely.

I haven’t really found the time to read much this week either. I did start reading another of Timothy Zahn’s novels. The problem is that the novel I started was the third in a series of four. It kind of was in the middle of the series and didn’t explain a lot, probably presuming that the reader had read the previous two novels. I felt that I didn’t really understand the universe the story was taking place in and that I didn’t really care about the character. So I stopped reading it.

Most of the authors I follow haven’t put out a new book in a while or they are busy working on side projects. Ah well, more time to write my own stories. I’ll be pressing onward towards my goal of finishing version 1.0 before my Chinese New Year holiday which starts on February 14th.

  1. Still time to update this blog in the middle of all the other stuff you need to deal with right now.

    Props to you bud.

    • Well i have a schedule and I try to keep to it. The hard part is actually getting writing done. I feel the next few weeks won’t be kind to my goals.
