For lack of a power cord a novel was lost…

So I forgot my laptop’s power cord this morning. Looks like I won’t be able to get much done today once I get through the real life work I need to do.

I am planning to start work on rewriting June 1st. The end of the month is usually not the best time for writing due to real life constraints so I’m just going to do some research and focus on actual work, possibly finish that short story I’ve been putting off. This will also give a tiny amount of time for those alpha readers who haven’t finished the first draft yet to send in their homework.

Yesterday I read a couple of interesting nonfiction works from Baen’s nonfiction series. The most interesting was called “The science in science fiction.” I’ll be the first to admit that I am no scientist but I am an eager researcher and while I may not go into too many details in the science in my novel, I am pretty sure that most of it does not contradict science as we know it today. The glaring exception is FTL traveling but even that I try to not dwell on too much and make reference to the current theories (or will once I get into rewrite.) I’ve found, like with most science fiction that takes place outside of the solar system, it’s best to just move on with the story. Even something like The Expanse, currently being lauded as very scientifically based, has nothing resembling reality when it comes to space travel, if you actually stop and think about it.

This week my wife and I also went to see the new Han Solo movie. It was fairly predictable but still fun. One of the main critics it has received is that since the audience knows (unless they live a really sheltered life) that Han Solo is in the later movies, the tension in the story goes way down since everyone knows that Han Solo survives the movie. My only response to this is that as with all prequels, we are there for the story. Why write any prequels if you know that the hero is alive in the original story? Does the fact that we know Bilbo is alive in Lord of the Rings take away from his experiences in the Hobbit? They never have for me.
