And the winner is….

Not me. So the results for the contest were published on the website and I didn’t make the top four. I did not receive any communication from the magazine so I don’t know how the story did or didn’t do. If you want to see the winners check out : https://www.teleportmagazine.com/2018/10/31/teleport-2018-science-fiction-contest-winners/

Now since I didn’t get any feedback from the editors, not even a “this is crap”, I read over the winning stories. They were pretty good though the first two are from published or soon to be published authors. I didn’t really like the third one but the runner up was pretty good too. I focused more on the form than the content as the plot is the plot and just really depends on the story you are telling. I don’t think that finding a dragon in a comet is any better sci-fi than learning to pilot a spaceship on an alien planet so that is just a matter of taste.

I was not expecting to win the contest but some feedback would have been nice. I noticed that the first and second winners were in first person POV and I wonder if this might be better for short stories. I’m redoing my story with a first person POV just to see how it feels. I feel that the two short stories that won were basically one scene stories with little flashbacks interspersed. My story takes place over a six month period of time so is a bit of a different format but still a fun read.

Now if only I had friends I could share my stories with and get useful feedback.
