There’s a Chinese expression: without coincidence there is no story. At the same time, in creative writing class, we are told to not put too many coincidences in our story. This is ironic because real life, what our stories are trying to imitate, is nothing but a series of coincidences.
Yesterday I finished a book that I had been reading both for myself and as research before redrafting my novel. The book was Jordan Peterson’s “12 rules for Life: an antidote to chaos.”
Well another week is here and August has truly started. Last Friday had a typhoon warning so all the the kids stayed home. It was greatly exaggerated but still gave me a three-day weekend which felt like an extension of my holiday.
As I exited Nice’s international airport, crowds cheered, half-naked people ran by me in the streets, loud horns sounded in my ear and an overwhelming sense of victory gripped my home country.
